Inside this ship, archaeologists found treasures fit for a king—but the most famous of all was a helmet, now called the Sutton Hoo mask.

This helmet wasn’t just for protection. It was a masterpiece, made of iron and decorated with shining silver plates. If you look closely, you’ll see patterns of animals and warriors, and even a face with eyebrows, nose, and a moustache! When someone wore it, the helmet turned them into a living mask—half person, half legend.

Buy the T-Shirt Here

Who did it belong to? Most experts think it was the helmet of an Anglo-Saxon king, maybe Raedwald, who ruled over East Anglia more than 1,300 years ago. The helmet was buried with the king in a giant ship, along with swords, shields, gold coins, and sparkling jewellery. It was a way to show respect and help the king on his journey to the afterlife.

The Sutton Hoo mask is special because it tells us about the people who lived in England before castles and knights. They were clever craftsmen, brave warriors, and great storytellers. Today, you can see the helmet in the British Museum, and imagine what it was like to be a king sailing into history.

So next time you see a picture of the Sutton Hoo mask, remember: it’s not just a piece of metal—it’s a window into England’s ancient past!

Who Was Anne Boleyn?
