Who is the Zennor Mermaid

Zennor is a granite village on the far west coast of Cornwall, and inside its church is a bench end carved around 500 years ago showing a mermaid holding a mirror and a comb. The story attached to it goes like this. A young chorister named Mathey Trewella sang so beautifully that a stranger began appearing at the back of the church to listen: a woman in a long dress, always gone before anyone could speak to her. One evening he followed her down the valley to Pendour Cove and was never seen again. Years later a ship's captain anchored off the cove and a mermaid rose from the water, asking him to lift his anchor because it blocked the door of her home, where she lived with her husband Mathey and their children. Locals say you can still hear him singing from the sea on a still night.

The tale was written down by the folklorist William Bottrell in the 1870s, but the carving is far older, and the mermaid with mirror and comb was a warning against vanity long before she became Cornwall's most famous sea-woman. She is one of the great figures of British folklore, and this is her chair, on your back.

The Zennor Mermaid, carved in ink.
